Ventura County – Phone scam targets Ventura County residents

Citizens in Ventura County have reported receiving calls from telephone numbers (805) 317-4523 and (805) 317-4533.  The caller identified himself through various names such as “Lieutenant Pete” and “Captain Alexander” with the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office. The unidentified caller is NOT a member of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office and the phone number used is NOT associated with the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office.

The victim is commonly informed he or she has missed a court appearance or failed to appear for jury duty and now has a warrant for his or her arrest. The caller has not yet demanded any money but has ordered the citizen to report to court immediately.

The Sheriff’s Office recommends that you do not call a phone number that is provided by a
scammer or a phone number left on a voicemail requesting a call back. Always do your research before providing any personal information or sending money.

If you have been scammed and suffered a financial loss, contact Sheriff’s Dispatch at (805) 654-9511 to file a report. You can also file a complaint online with the Federal Trade Commission at
www.ftc.gov or the Federal Bureau of Investigation at www.ic3.gov.
