Local Law Enforcement & Immigration

As Sheriff, I feel it is important to share my perspective on local law enforcement’s role regarding immigration laws. To be very clear, the Sheriff’s Office does not involve itself with the active enforcement of immigration laws. Under my leadership this practice is not going to change. A safe community needs an effective law enforcement agency. To be effective, we need trust and cooperation between all residents and the deputies sworn to protect them. We do not want the fear of immigration status to inhibit members of our communities from interacting with their deputies and/or reporting crimes.

As a result, and in compliance with SB 54, our deputies do not inquire about a person’s immigration status during a call for service or while in custody. In addition, we do not use ICE agents as interpreters, and we do not arrest people for immigration orders or other immigration holds.

As the Sheriff of Ventura County, I have the discretion to share information with ICE regarding any incarcerated person who has committed a qualifying offense according to law. If an incarcerated person has no qualifying offense, then no information is shared with ICE.

This process has been in place for years and is compliant with the California Values Act (SB 54) and the TRUTH Act. As Sheriff, I want anyone who victimizes members of our community to be held accountable to the fullest extent under the law. In doing this, we ensure better protection for all law-abiding members of our community. This is perfectly aligned with my mission and strategy statements, and also with Pillar 7 – Better outcomes for all. It is to this end that I use every available option to keep our community safe and hold criminals accountable.

We deeply appreciate and value the trust and confidence our communities place in the Sheriff’s Office and look forward to your continued support as we serve you.
